Technology: Improving Research for Researchers At University Hospitals Birmingham

Dr Tony Whitehouse and colleagues at University Hospitals Birmingham have found a new solution for selecting participants to pursue their research to save the lives of some of the hospital’s most acutely ill patients. Using the hospitals’ electronic prescribing information and communication system (PICS), Dr Whitehouse and his team have teamed up with the informatics department to design computerised decision support that will detect patients who may be eligible to participate in one of the numerous research projects being undertaken by staff in the critical care department. These technological developments will help to improve the recruitment process for studies by eliminating human bias, and reduce the workload for staff in this aspect of their research.
